Holiday schedule nightmare - Thanksgiving is in 8 weeks

We're supposed to alternate Thanksgiving but my parents are having a huge family thing this year (first time in 5 years because my dad was sick). I have the kids Thanksgiving 2024 per the custody order but I'd really like to take them. My ex is already planning something with her new husband's family. What's reasonable to ask? Am I entitled to ask for a swap? How do I even bring this up without sounding entitled?

This is the worst part about co-parenting. Your ex probably already told their family they're coming so now you're the bad guy if you want to stick to the schedule.

Could you do Thanksgiving with your parents another weekend instead? Like the Saturday after? Some families do that and it actually takes pressure off.

Get it in writing ASAP. I learned the hard way that verbal agreements about holidays are basically worthless. Your custody agreement should say what happens here.

Eight weeks is not enough time to sort this out. You need to get ahead of it now before everyone has plans locked in.

Have you considered what your kids actually want to do for Thanksgiving or are you focused on what works logistics-wise?

Honestly if you're supposed to alternate, that's the rule. This year is their year or it's not. Don't set a precedent of being flexible about this stuff.
