Holiday scheduling is already stressing me out and it's only July

Christmas is 5 months away and my ex just texted asking to switch our rotation because her family is coming into town. We have a specific holiday schedule in the papers. I want to be flexible because the kids would benefit from having their grandparents there, but like... I also planned everything around having them that week. How hard do other dads push back on last-minute changes or is it better to just go with it? She's already mad I didn't immediately say yes.

Check your agreement first. If the schedule is in writing, you don't owe flexibility just because her family is coming to town. That's what the rotation is for. She can see them a different time.

Being flexible is good, but not when it's on short notice and you haven't had time to plan around it. If she wants to switch, she needs to ask earlier and maybe offer you something in return, not just expect you to bend.

Five months out is plenty of time for her to tell her family the schedule doesn't work. Don't absorb her planning problem.

This is tricky because you want to be the reasonable one, but also if you set the precedent that the schedule is flexible whenever she asks, you'll be re-negotiating every holiday. Stay firm on the original plan. Her family visiting is nice but not your problem to solve by giving up your time.

My ex did this every year and I caved because 'flexibility is good co-parenting.' Huge mistake. By year 3 she saw it as total negotiation and my holiday time got swiss-cheesed. Stick to the agreement.
