How do I tell the kids we're separating?

Going through a divorce right now and we haven't told the kids yet (8 and 11). My ex and I actually get along okay and we want to do this right. We're planning to tell them together on Sunday. I'm terrified. Any advice on how to approach this? What do we say about custody and the schedule? I don't want them to think any of this is their fault.

This is such a tough situation. My best advice is to keep it simple, honest, and age-appropriate. Let them know it's not their fault and that both of you still love them. The fact that you and your ex are actually communicating about this shows the kids will be okay. Consistency after the separation matters more than the words you use right now.

Going through this too. We told ours separately first so each kid could process it with just one parent, then we did a family conversation. Having a united front with your ex on the message really helps. Stay strong man.

The worst part is they probably already sense something is off. Kids pick up on that tension way more than we think. Just be direct, be calm, and make sure they know their schedule won't be chaotic. That's what my 8 year old needed to hear most.
