How do you handle holidays when you're divorced?

Our kids are 6 and 8. We've been split for 2 years and haven't figured out a solid holiday plan. Last Christmas was a mess because we both wanted them on the actual day. This year I want to get ahead of it. The kids want to be together with both parents but obviously that's not how it works anymore. What does your custody order say about holidays? How do you make it less sad for everyone?
