How do you handle kids overhearing arguments?

Last week my 7 year old heard me and her mom yelling on the phone about child support. She got real quiet and went to her room. I felt awful. We're trying to keep things civil but sometimes emotions run high. How do other dads deal with this? Any tips for having difficult conversations without the kids hearing?
