How do you handle major purchases?

My ex and I split custody 50/50 and it's going okay overall but we're butting heads on big stuff. Our son needs new cleats for soccer and she wants to get the expensive ones, I found a cheaper pair that would work just fine. I'd be paying half either way but she's not asking me first, just telling me after she bought them. Do you guys have a rule about when you need to talk to the other parent before spending money on the kids? We don't have it written down and I'm wondering if I should bring it up or just let it go.

With 50/50 custody you definitely need to be on the same page about major stuff. Have you two tried making a list of what counts as a major purchase that needs approval from both sides? That might help set expectations.

Big purchases always cause friction in co-parenting situations. Maybe set a dollar amount threshold where you both agree to discuss it first? Like anything over $500 or whatever makes sense for your situation.

I'm not in that situation but seems like you need to have a calm conversation about what each of you considers a major purchase. Could be electronics, could be furniture, could be expensive toys. Get specific.
