How do you handle your ex talking bad about you to the kids

My 8 year old came home yesterday and told me mom said I left because I didn't want to be a dad anymore. That's not what happened at all. We separated because the marriage wasn't working, not because I wanted out of being a father. How am I supposed to respond to this without making it worse? I don't want to throw her under the bus but I also don't want my kids thinking I abandoned them. Any advice from guys who've dealt with parental alienation?

That's a tough spot. At 8 years old, kids are old enough to figure things out over time by watching your actions. Keep being the dad you are and he'll understand someday.

That's rough man, I'm sorry. My boys are younger but I'm dreading the day something like that gets back to me. Your kid needs to hear the truth from you, not her version. Stay consistent and keep showing up.
