How do you handle your kids asking why mom and dad don't live together?

My 5yo keeps asking when mommy is coming back home. I've explained we're not together anymore but I don't think he understands that it's permanent. My ex and I get along okay but it's awkward when I pick him up. He seems sad when I drop him off at her place. I don't want to say anything bad about his mom but I also don't want him thinking we might get back together. How have other guys handled this conversation?

My kid asked this constantly around that age. We kept it to 'mommy and daddy love you both so much but we're happier living in different homes' and left it at that. Some questions get asked over and over and that's normal.

This one hits different because there's no right answer that makes them feel better, you know? All I can do is remind mine that sometimes grown ups love each other differently and that our separation has nothing to do with how much we love him.

Five is still so young. We've had the same conversation with ours about a hundred times and honestly they just need reassurance that both parents love them and it's not their fault. Keep it simple and honest.
