How do you split holidays when kids have two homes?

We're working on our first custody schedule and trying to figure out holidays. Both of us want Christmas morning with the kids obviously. We've got Thanksgiving somewhat figured out but Christmas is where we're stuck. Thinking alternating years but that seems rough for the kids to miss either parent on Christmas. How do other people make this work without everyone being miserable?

This is tough stuff. We did alternating years for the big holidays which helped even things out. Just make sure whatever you decide actually works long term, not just sounds fair on paper.
