How to handle different parenting styles between houses?

My kids' mom is way more strict than I am. Bedtimes are earlier over there, no junk food, homework comes first. At my place it's more relaxed. The kids are starting to ask why they have different rules and honestly I'm not sure what to say. Part of me likes being the fun parent but I'm worried this is confusing for them. Anyone figure out how to get on the same page with an ex?

Yeah, different styles can actually work out okay as long as you're both coming from a good place. I do the relaxed thing too, but I still make sure homework and school stuff get done. Maybe you two could agree on a few non-negotiables so she feels heard without you having to go full drill sergeant at your place.

It's actually not the worst thing for kids to experience different environments. My house is basically a chaos zone but bedtime still happens, you know? The important part is that she's being a good parent her way and you're being a good parent your way. That's what they'll remember.

Man, this is tough. My ex and I had the same thing going on for a while. The key is just being consistent within your own house and trusting that she's got her thing handled over there. Kids are smarter than we think and will figure out the different rules pretty quick.
