How to handle when kids come home upset about other parent's new partner

My 8 year old came back yesterday saying mom's boyfriend was 'mean' because he told him to turn off the TV. Tried not to freak out or bash the guy but I'm concerned. Don't know much about this dude. Should I reach out to my ex directly or just let it go? Don't want to overstep but also want to know what's happening in my kids' lives when they're not with me.

Eight is old enough that he'll pick up on tension. I'd focus on listening to what he actually said happened and not jumping to conclusions about the boyfriend. Might've just been a normal parent thing.

The hard part is not letting this become a weapon in co-parenting. I've been there. Just ask your kid more questions about what happened and keep it neutral.
