How to talk to kids about why mom and dad don't live together anymore

My 6 year old asked me yesterday why he doesn't have a bedroom at my apartment like he does at moms house. I froze. He knows about the separation but I don't think he really understands it. His mom and I are on decent terms so at least we can try to be consistent with our messaging. What do you guys say? I want him to know it's not his fault but also not get into details about why we split up.

That freezing moment is real. I'd tell him he gets a bedroom because both homes are his home now, and you picked out special stuff just for his space at yours. Kids need to know they're not losing anything, just getting more.

That's a tough one. For a 6 year old, simple and honest works best - something like 'We both love you so much, we just can't live together, but you get your own space at both our homes.' Then let him ask follow-up questions.
