Kid asked me why we got divorced

My 7 year old asked me yesterday why mom and I split up. I didn't want to bad mouth her mom or get into the complicated stuff so I just said we weren't happy together anymore and it wasn't his fault. My ex is worried I'm going to poison him against her but I'm really trying not to do that. Anyone else dealt with this? Not sure if I handled it right.
