Kid asked why mom and I aren't together anymore

My 7 year old asked this out of nowhere in the car yesterday. I know it was coming but man it hurt. I tried to keep it simple and honest without throwing her mom under the bus. Said sometimes people love each other but aren't right for being married. That adults make mistakes and it's not his fault. He seemed okay with it but I know he's processing. The custody schedule has him weekdays with me and weekends with her which honestly works out well. Just feeling heavy about the whole thing today.

That's a tough one man, I feel for you. Sounds like you handled it the right way by keeping it simple and honest. Those conversations never get easier but you're doing the right thing.

That's rough, but it sounds like you gave him the mature answer he deserved. Just keep showing up for him and being present, that's what matters most.
