Kids asking why mom bad mouths me during their time with her

My 11 year old came back from his mom's place last week and mentioned that she told him I don't care about them because I missed a school event due to work. I had specifically told her I couldn't make it two weeks in advance. Now I'm worried about what else is being said. Do I address this with my ex or just focus on being the best version of myself when the kids are with me? This is really frustrating.

That's a low blow on her part. One missed event happens to every dad, especially when you're juggling two households. Don't let her narrative become your kid's reality - your actions over the long haul will speak louder than her words.

Man, that's rough. I deal with this stuff too and it's one of the hardest parts of co-parenting. Your kid needs to hear from you directly that you care, and that missing one event doesn't change that. Kids are smart enough to figure out the truth over time.

Sorry you're in this spot. I'd have a calm conversation with your son about how sometimes grown-ups say things when they're upset, and that you always care about him no matter what. Consistency is your best weapon here.
