Kids asking why mommy and daddy don't live together anymore

My 6 year old asked me yesterday why we don't all live together. Broke my heart. I tried explaining it in a way kids could understand but honestly I don't know if I did it right. My ex and I are trying to keep things friendly for them but it's hard sometimes when I'm angry about how things went down. What have you guys told your kids about the separation? Any books or resources that helped?

That question absolutely wrecks you. My kids asked the same thing and I went with something simple like 'sometimes parents love their kids but can't live together, and that's okay.' The honesty without the details seems to help.

I feel you on that one. I try to reassure mine that it's not their fault and that I'm still their dad no matter what. The hard part is they just want everyone under one roof, and there's no perfect answer for that.
