He asked this out of nowhere last week. I think he picked up on it from friends or something because his mom has been dating someone for like 6 months. I don't want to make it weird but also don't want him to think he needs to "fix" things by me dating? How are other dads handling these questions?
This is sweet actually. He's probably worried about you being alone or wants things to feel more 'normal' like his friends' families. I'd just reassure him that you're okay and that grown-ups have their own timeline for stuff like that. Kids pick up on more than we realize.
Definitely sounds like he picked it up from school or friends. Kids that age are starting to notice that different families look different. Just be honest with him that you're happy as you are. Doesn't have to be a long conversation.
My 10yo asked me this and I almost fell off the couch. Turns out he was just curious if I was sad or lonely. I told him I'm happy with how things are and that sometimes that's enough. He seemed relieved. Might just be checking in on you emotionally without realizing it.
Mine's 8 and asked something similar last year. I just kept it simple and honest. Told him daddy loves him and that I'm not looking right now, but if that changes he'd meet her when the time was right. He seemed satisfied with that. Kids are pretty straightforward if you don't overthink it.

Nine is old enough to understand that people can be single and fine. Don't make it weird by avoiding the question. My approach was 'maybe someday, but right now I'm really enjoying just being your dad and spending time with you.' He moved on and never brought it up again.
