We've been doing 50/50 during school year but I'm trying to figure out what makes sense for summer. She wants him for 6 weeks straight, I was thinking we alternate weeks. Not trying to be difficult but I feel like I'd miss too much. Anyone dealt with this before? How do you handle extended time off?
I did 6 weeks straight for a bit and honestly it created some tension with my schedule and my kid felt the shift. Shorter blocks work better for everyone, keeps the routine less chaotic. Might be worth suggesting a different split to her.
Six weeks straight is tough to swallow when you're used to 50/50. I'd suggest proposing alternating weeks or maybe she gets 4 weeks and you get 4, keeps things more balanced for your relationship with him.
Summer's the best time to build memories with the kids. What if you compromise with her getting first 3 weeks, then he spends the second half with you doing road trips or whatever you guys love? We've hit 47 states that way and it's gold.
I'd say try to stick close to 50/50 if you can. The kids do better when they know what to expect, and switching to something totally different for three months can mess with that. Maybe just adjust pickup/dropoff times if one parent needs flexibility for work?
What does your ex want to do? That's really the first conversation. We've been doing extended weeks during summer (Mon-Fri with one parent, Sat-Sun with other) and it's cleaner than constantly switching. Gives everyone a rhythm.

Summer is tough because the kids want consistency but you also need to think about your own schedule. We do a week on week off during summer which gives my ex and me actual breathing room. The 50/50 thing sounds good on paper but summer's long and someone's gonna burn out.
