Parenting app recommendations - what actually works?

Using our fingers to text back and forth about custody stuff has gotten old. Been reading good reviews about OurFamilyWizard and Coparently but they're pricey. Anyone actually use these and is it worth the money? Or should I just set up a shared Google calendar and call it a day? Would love to hear what's saved you headaches.
