Paying child support and still can't afford rent

I'm paying $1400 a month in child support which is more than half my income. I have my kids two nights a week and I want them to have more time with me but honestly I can barely afford my apartment right now. My lawyer said I could try to modify the agreement but I don't want to look like a dead beat dad. Anyone else struggling with this situation?
