paying child support while working freelance

My income is inconsistent right now since I went freelance last year. Some months I make decent money, other months not so much. My ex's lawyer is pushing for a higher support amount based on my best months. I'm not trying to avoid paying but I'm worried about months where I don't have enough work. Anyone dealt with variable income and child support? Do I need a lawyer to modify the agreement?

This is stressful. The freelance thing was supposed to help balance life with kids but then you're stressed about making support payments. Talk to a lawyer about modifying based on your actual earnings if it's really that inconsistent.

Freelance with two kids is rough. Your income fluctuates but child support doesn't, that's the hard part. Have you looked into modifying the agreement based on actual average income? Courts usually want you on a level playing field.

Document those inconsistent months. If you're legitimately making less some months you can probably get it adjusted. Most judges understand freelance isn't stable. Just gotta prove the pattern with tax returns or bank statements.
