Does anyone do a flexible pickup schedule? Our custody order says Friday at 5pm but sometimes my ex has to work late and sometimes I'm running behind. Should we just keep swapping the specific time or does that create problems down the road? Seems easier than being rigid but idk if flexibility without documentation bites us later.
I'd say keep it flexible but have a rule like "request changes by Thursday for the following week" so neither of you are scrambling last minute. Takes 30 seconds to text but prevents a lot of "oh crap I forgot to ask" situations
Honestly if it's working for you guys and there's no conflict, stay flexible. But the second it becomes a source of frustration or confusion, lock it in with a schedule. Document whatever pattern you naturally fall into for a month and that becomes your baseline

Flexible is good in theory but can get messy fast. We started flexible and it turned into me being the flexible one while she kept picking times that worked for her. Written schedule with maybe 2-3 exceptions per month is the sweet spot
This is how we started and it was fine until it wasn't. One of us will eventually get resentful about it (guaranteed). Better to have the official schedule and then be flexible within it when needed, rather than flexible in theory but strict in practice
