Son asked why he has two houses

My 4yo asked this yesterday and I completely fumbled it. Just said "because mommy and daddy live in different places" and changed the subject. He seemed confused. How do you even explain this to a preschooler? My ex and I haven't really talked about how to approach this conversation together and I feel like I should've had a better answer ready.
