Son asked why mommy and daddy don't live together

My 6 year old asked me this yesterday during our time and I just froze. I kept it simple, said mommy and daddy love him very much but we're happier living apart. He seemed to accept it but it broke me a little. How old were your kids when they really started asking questions about the divorce? And what did you guys say? I want to be honest but not put him in the middle or bad mouth his mom.

That's a tough moment. You handled it well keeping it simple. My daughter asked something similar and I realized kids need to know it's not their fault and that both parents still love them even if we're not together. Sounds like you nailed it.

These questions are the hardest part of co-parenting honestly. Did he seem satisfied with the answer or did he follow up with more?

Six is such a confusing age for stuff like this. I bet he was processing it for a while before asking. The fact that you didn't panic and gave him a straightforward answer is huge.
