My 7 year old came back from his mom's house yesterday and asked me why mommy said I was a bad dad. We've been divorced for two years and have a pretty solid parenting plan but this is getting ridiculous. He's old enough to understand he's hearing stuff he shouldn't. I don't want to trash talk his mom to him but I also can't just let this slide. How do I handle this without making things worse?
This is such a tough spot. I've been there. The temptation to bad mouth her back is huge but you have to take the high road for your kid's sake. Keep showing up, keep being present, and he'll know the truth.
I'm so sorry man. That's unfair to him and unfair to you. Have you thought about talking to him about it in an age appropriate way? Nothing negative about his mom but just honest?
That's rough and I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Without getting into the weeds, the best thing you can do is just keep being the dad you're trying to be. Let your actions speak louder than whatever words she's saying. Kids figure it out as they get older.

Don't let her poison the well. Keep doing what you're doing and eventually your son will be old enough to understand the situation for what it really is. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for.
