He walks up to me totally serious and says 'Dad why did the chicken go to school?' I'm like 'why?' and he goes 'Because it wanted to get smarter!' Then he just walks away laughing at his own joke for like 2 minutes. No punchline, doesn't make sense, but something about the confidence killed me. This is peak parenting right here.
That's the best feeling man. Those moments between the co-parenting weekends are gold, and the jokes just hit different at that age. Sounds like you nailed being present for it.

That's such a pure moment. At that age they're still genuinely trying to tell you jokes instead of just copying them from TikTok. Soak that up because it changes around age 9 or 10 and they get all self-conscious about it.
The fact that he walked up 'totally serious' makes this even better. That's the whole comedy right there, the delivery.
That serious delivery is what makes it so funny. Kids don't understand why we laugh at their jokes but who cares, those are the moments that stick with you.
