The fact that he groaned means you're doing it right. That's the dad joke sweet spot where they're annoyed but also kind of impressed.
This is gold. I had my 7 year old actually laugh at one of my jokes last month and I felt like I'd won the lottery. The eye rolls are brutal but when you get that genuine laugh? That's the real win right there.
