My kid asked me why I always make dad jokes
I told him it's in my DNA. He said 'Dad that's not even funny.' I said 'I know, that's why I'm your father and not your mother.' He groaned so hard I thought he'd pull a muscle. Mission accomplished.

Your kid's response is actually gold though. That's the sign you've officially achieved dad joke status. When they start groaning, you know you've made it.
The DNA answer is perfect. Your son will remember this moment way more fondly than he thinks right now. Dad jokes are their own kind of love language.
This is exactly what my kids say to me. The eye roll is guaranteed. But deep down they know that dad jokes are a feature not a bug at this point.
Classic setup and punchline right there. He'll groan at your jokes now but eventually he'll realize he's doing the same thing to his own kids. It's a rite of passage.

Ha, the classic setup and callback. I've definitely worn out this exact joke with my older one. Now she just sighs before I even get to the punchline.
