I told him it's because I'm a dad. He said that doesn't make it funny. I said well it doesn't have to be good to be a dad joke, that's the whole point! He rolled his eyes so hard I thought they'd get stuck. Mission accomplished.
Your kid roasted you and honestly that's hilarious. But also he's got a point - dad jokes work because of the delivery and the commitment to the bit, not because you're a dad. Double down. The worst a joke is, the better it lands.
Haha I got told the same thing last week. I just leaned into it and said 'exactly, they're supposed to be bad, that's the whole thing.' Now my kids actively groan when they see me thinking of one. Mission accomplished.
