I use the same explanation and my son just stares at me like I'm an idiot. But here's the thing, he's starting to make bad jokes too so the curse is being passed down which is exactly how it should be.

Your kid has a point though. The definition of a dad joke is supposedly a wholesome, groan worthy joke that only a dad would tell. So your kid actually proved your own logic right which is pretty funny.
Haha that's perfect. The circular logic of dad jokes is what makes them actually work. My kids used to hate my jokes too until they got older and realized that's the whole point.
I'm stealing this explanation. My 8 year old asked me the same thing last month and I just shrugged at him. Next time I'm going with the 'exactly that's why' line.
