I told him I'm not reading them, I'm just looking at the pictures. He said "Dad that's not how you read." I said "Exactly, that's why I'm looking at the pictures."

That's a solid dad move right there. My kids call me out on the same thing - apparently looking at pictures doesn't count as actually reading the instructions according to them.
