My 5 year old walks up to me while I'm reading the instructions for some furniture and asks 'Dad why are you reading that? You're supposed to just build it and if it wobbles duct tape it.' Out of the mouths of babes. He's got me figured out already.
Five year olds are brutal with their logic. I usually tell mine that instructions are like having someone there to help me do it right the first time instead of messing it up and having to redo it. Seems to make sense to them and honestly it's good modeling for following processes.
This made me laugh because my newborn doesn't judge me for reading instructions yet, but I know it's coming. I'm definitely stealing your parenting move here though.

Ha! That's perfect. My 6 year old did something similar last week asking why I needed to read directions if I'm the adult. Apparently he thinks we're supposed to just know everything automatically. The honest answer that seemed to resonate was that even grown-ups have to learn new things.
