I told him I like to know how to use my new tools BEFORE something explodes. He asked what could possibly go wrong. I'm not sure how to explain that his existence is proof of my poor planning skills.

Ha. I get it though. You want to know what you're doing before you start building something. Better than winging it and having a disaster on your hands. Plus instructions aren't that bad if you actually take the time to read them.
Your kid asking what could possibly explode is the real question here. That's the concern. But yeah the reading instructions thing is smart. Nothing worse than halfway through a project realizing you did it backwards.
