The thing is they're going to remember this conversation way more than you think they will. One day they'll be a parent and that soccer ref line will hit different.
That's actually a solid analogy though. Being a parent is mostly making calls that half your audience thinks is wrong and just rolling with it. The soccer ref thing tracks.
