Eight year olds are hilarious because they're just smart enough to know when you're bullshitting. I've been caught the same way about instructions.
That's a solid dad joke delivery though. The fact that he called you out already tells you he's got your sense of humor. Better he's thinking critically at 8 than buying everything you say without question.

This is peak dad right here. My kids do the same thing when I try to play dumb. They're like yeah Dad we know those words don't work that way.
