My kids tell me everything in the car but nothing at home. I learned more about my son's day on the 15 minute drive to soccer practice than I have in the last 3 months. Apparently there's some girl who sits next to him in math. His face got all red when he told me. This is happening isn't it. They're growing up. I'm not ready.
Your post cut off but yeah the car is magic. I've learned about friend drama, school stress, everything. All I had to do was drive.
The radio is probably helping too. It gives them something else to focus on so they don't feel like you're interrogating them.
I started taking my son on solo drives just to chat and it changed everything. No distractions, no siblings to compete with for attention, just talking.
It's the lack of direct eye contact I think. Kids feel less vulnerable when you're both looking forward at the road instead of across the table at each other.

This is 100% real. My oldest opens up to me about everything during our commute but the second we get home he shuts down. Something about the car just makes it easier.
