My teenager had friends over and I dropped this gem: Why don't scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything. Dead silence. One of his friends tried to be nice and laughed but it was pity laughter. My son literally left the room. Worth it.

That silence is the worst but also kind of hilarious in hindsight. I tried a similar joke with my kids and got the exact same reaction - no regrets though.

Oh man, the dead silence after a dad joke is just part of the job description. At least you're committing to the craft, that's what matters.
