Ha! The store brand cereal move is peak dad energy. I did the exact same thing last week and my 7-year-old gave me this look like I'd personally betrayed him. Now he calls it 'the sad cereal.' Worth every disappointed glance though.
This is the way. My kids have learned that name brand and store brand taste basically identical, and honestly it's saved me probably a grand a year. The trick is never let them see you comparing the nutritional labels side by side or they catch on.
